Biopsychosocial Model of ED: The Need for a Multidisciplinary Approach to Treatment

Marita McCabe

There have been significant medical advances in the last ten years for the treatment of Erectile Dysfunction (ED). This paper examines the data that relate to the biological, psychological and sociocultural determinants of ED. The relative benefits of using a medical only, psychological only, and combined treatment approach for ED are discussed. Issues to be considered in determining the efficacy of the different approaches include level of ED, sexual satisfaction, as well as the impact of ED (and its treatment) on the relationship. Even if psychological factors do not lead to ED, they are likely to result from the development of ED. It is therefore important that professionals work together in a multi-disciplinary team to address this problem. The best way to achieve successful outcomes for this disorder are discussed.
